As the qualifications for college scholarships increase and become more competitive, especially for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, CIAS suggests that all our juniors and seniors take their preparation for the SAT & ACT seriously. These classes offered at UWF offer a great opportunity to you! SAT/ACT Preparation Class at the University of West FloridaDates:Starting June 19, 2013, ending August 9, 2013 Starting July 17, 2013, ending September 6, 2013 Starting August 21, 2013, ending October 11, 2013 More Info:uwf.augusoft.net/index.cfm?method=ClassInfo.ClassInformation&int_class_id=36596&int_category_id=2&int_sub_category_id=166"Making the decision to attend college is probably one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make, and your performance on college entrance exams is instrumental in determining your college choice. Universities and colleges throughout the U.S. require applicants to take the SAT or ACT as part of their evaluation package. This course will prepare you for both tests. Both the ACT and the SAT contain verbal and math question types. SAT/ACT Preparation Part I will give you all the information you need to do well on the verbal questions of the ACT and the new SAT. The ACT verbal sections are called the Reading Test, the English Test, and the Science Test. The Reading Test and the English Test assess your knowledge of English usage, grammar, and reading comprehension. This course will provide you with a grammar and usage review specifically geared to the rules that you'll be tested on in the ACT. You'll also learn how to maximize your time on reading comprehension passages and the passages in the science test. Beginning in 2005, the ACT began offering an optional essay test. If you choose to take the essay test, our course will show you how to do your best writing in the short period of time you'll be given. In 2005, the SAT verbal questions also changed. The lessons in this course are designed to prepare you for those changes. The new verbal sections are called Writing and Critical Reading. The Critical Reading section consists of sentence completions and reading comprehension of both long and short passages. You’ll learn how to answer both types of questions in the most time-efficient manner. The SAT also contains a new Writing section, which includes a student-written essay and multiple-choice questions about grammar and English usage. This course will prepare you to write the type of essays that grading officials are looking for, and will provide you with a grammar and usage review that's specific to the rules you'll be tested on in the new SAT. In addition to preparing you for specific question types on both exams, this course will give you pointers in time management, anxiety relief, scoring, and general standardized test-taking. Weekly assignments will encourage you to work with your fellow classmates and your instructor to maximize your performance on all aspects of the verbal questions of the ACT and SAT. This course and its follow-up will prepare you to excel in all sections of the undergraduate college entrance exams and provide you with the means to achieve your best potential score!"

Test Preparation The BEST preparation that I can recommend is tutoring/coaching with Dr. Mike Bere locally. Contact him at 377-3566, and tell that I sent you to him. He will teach you the test psychology behind the test that you are preparing for...an invaluable service and prep tool! Many CIAS parents and students alike have reported that Dr. Bere's services were by far the best test prep investment of all that they completed (including classes, group prep, etc.). That brings us to our next topic: how can you prepare for college entrance tests without paying for tutoring? Well, tutoring with Dr. Mike Bere IS THE BEST METHOD of preparation available to you, but you can also study on your own using prep books and websites. Test prep books, either for the ACT or SAT, are available from all major book sellers: Barnes and Noble, Books-A-Million, Amazon, etc. Here are a few websites that provide FREE test prep: Number2:www.number2.comTest Prep Review:www.testprepreview.comSpecifically the SAT section www.testprepreview.com/sat_practice.htmSpecifically the ACT section: www.testprepreview.com/act_practice.htmSAT website:sat.collegeboard.org/practice/ACT website:www.actstudent.org/testprep/Note: You should never have to pay for free website prep services! During the 2016 achievement testing in May, I noticed that the majority of our students in grades 9-10 were very unfamiliar with scientific calculator. This is a point of test preparation, as a part of a larger school improvement plan, that needs to improve.
It is imperative that all students in math classes Algebra 1 and up learn to learn to use a scientific calculator effectively and accurately. The model that we use at the CIAS Campus School is the TI-30 and its versions. This calculator has 30 functions that high school students need to learn to use, such as roots, raising powers, etc. It is available from Walmart, Amazon, etc.
It is our desire to help your students improve their test scores and general testing experiences in preparation for college entrance exams such as the SAT and ACT, the ASVAB, etc. Please help us facilitate these changes by purchasing a scientific calculator and making sure that your student uses it on a regular basis for math schoolwork.
