In October, most seniors start working on college application
tasks such as getting recommendations and writing essays. Here
are some tips to help you get started.
COLLEGE INTERVIEWS
Don't forget that the college interview is a two-way street. Come
prepared with thoughtful questions for your interviewer. Asking
questions demonstrates your interest and also can give you an
inside look at the college that you can't get from brochures
and websites. If you interview with a student or alumnus, take
advantage of the opportunity to ask questions about the college
that you might not ask an admissions officer, such as "Which was
the best dorm to live in?" "Is the food edible?" or "What's the
social life like?"

TIP: EXPLORE MAJORS & CAREERS
If you're thinking about college, it's also time to start thinking
about college majors and careers. Before searching for colleges
by the majors they offer, take the time to learn about some of
the over 700 majors and careers profiled on collegeboard.com.

GET GREAT RECOMMENDATIONS
Positive letters of recommendation, from teachers that know you
well, can help your application stand out from the crowd. Help
your teachers help you: give them plenty of time (at least one
month) to write and send your letters; provide them with addressed, stamped envelopes; and remind them of your accomplishments and your plans -- the best letters include specific examples and stories rather than vague praise.
