During this week's class we completed collaborative prepositional phrase writing, learned about the three kinds of verbals, learned about the various types of paragraph development and organization, reviewed transitional expressions, and identified parts of a well-formatted essay. Remember to bring your first essays into class this week so that I can grade them and give you feedback! The writing assignments for this week were the following: 1. 200+ word Narrative Paragraph using Chronological Order & including an Incident for development. 2. 200+ word Process Paragraph using Explanations & including Transitional Expressions for development. We reviewed verbals and transitional expressions, completed an editing exercise, took Quiz 1, learned about Editing Symbols, and brainstormed about writing Character Sketches. Your writing assignment this week is the following: 1. 300+ word Character Sketch of a FICTIONAL (made-up) character Use DESCRIPTION/NARRATIVE to develop your character Use SENSORY DETAILS Start studying the Editing Symbols Chart for Quiz 2 next week (3/1/10)! Class Lecture: We covered the first list of Literary Devices (Set A) and discussed Research Essays, Essay format, and formatting Check this website out:lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/fwalters/essaybasic.htmlAssignment:350+ word RESEARCH ESSAY Typed Double-spaced TOPIC CHOICES: Recycling American Philanthropy Political Activism ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Check List - Include: at least six (6) Prepositional Phrases.
- Include Transitional Expressions where appropriate (for coherence).
- Make sure that you use Vivid Sensory Details: verbs, adj’s, adv’s
- Include: one of each Verbal and/or Verbal Phrase- gerund, participle, infinitive. Italicize to show where they are! Ex: Running down the street was the only thing that the frightened boy thought to do. (gerund phrase, used as subject)
- Include at least two (2) Literary Devices listed on the worksheets during
class this week.
- Check your paragraph for Unity.
- Include: Word Count (Go to Tools menu, Click on Word Count) at the bottom of your page. Ex: WC: 109 words
- Include: a WORKS CITED page at the end of your paper.
- Staple your essay pages together.
- Make three (3) copies of your essay for the peer review next week!!!
There is only one (1) essay assignment this week, but you will need to do some research and reference your sources. Have a great week!

Your Topic: _________________________________ Continue work on your 350+ word RESEARCH ESSAY & finish it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Check List- Is your essay typed in Times/Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced, and formatted correctly?
- Did you use 2-3 sources for your information (NOT Wikipedia!)?
- Did you spell-check AND grammar-check it?
- Read your essay aloud to check for awkwardness and smooth flow of ideas!

During class, we reviewed the Literary Device lists (in prep for a quiz next week!). We also talked about basic essay errors that I have observed in your writings. This Week's Assignment:1. Read this OWL article about Brainstorming & Freewriting: www.unc.edu/depts/wcweb/handouts/brainstorming.htmlWrite a 5-sentence SUMMARY of the article. Include at least three helpful tips that you learned from the article. 2. Write a SUMMARY (word count will vary!) of a magazine article. It should be approximately one-third (1/3) of its original length. For full credit, please staple a photocopy of the original article to the back of your summary before you turn it in! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Check List- Is your essay typed in Times/Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced, and formatted correctly (1-inch margins, etc.)?
- Did you spell-check AND grammar-check it?
- Read your essay aloud to check for awkwardness and smooth flow of ideas!
- Did you include/staple a photocopy of the original article?
